Shop Smarter, Not Harder

What's in your closet? Seriously, what does your wardrobe look like? How do you feel about it as a whole? How do you feel about the clothes individually? How often do you wear every item you own? Do you have a quality, functional wardrobe or one where "I have nothing to wear..." is a daily saying? These are important questions to ask yourself and to honestly answer as you evaluate your wardrobe.

Prioritizing "quality over quantity" definitely should apply to your wardrobe. If you own many pieces that you don't wear, it's time to re-evaluate what's in your closet. If you don't wear what you own, then why is it still in your wardrobe? Try each item on and be honest with yourself. Do you like it? Does it fit and flatter your figure? Any unworn and/or unflattering items just clutter what could be a fabulous boutique-like closet (that is, if it doesn't already look like that, of course).

We want options so we may buy a large quantity of clothing, but how much of it actually fits and flatters? How many of those clothes are actually worn once purchased? It's time to "shop smarter, not harder." Changing it up is important so it's extremely important to shop smart and with a plan. If your wardrobe contains QUALITY pieces that fit and flatter AND mix and match and coordinate, then you will have many more outfit options with fewer items. I'm not saying not to fill your closet. I'm just saying to have more options and less of the "I-Have-Nothing-To-Wear" syndrome, it takes strategy and effort.

Basic wardrobe staples and accents, including trendy items, should be tracked so when shopping you know what's missing from your wardrobe and what will work well in and with your current wardrobe.

Below are some outfit "switch-ups" to illustrate how you can transform an outfit by simply switching up the accent pieces.

Day Look 1
Imagine: Lunch with the Mother-in-Law
Main Staple: Calvin Klein dress
Accents: NY&Co. earrings, bracelets, belt and bag, Bakers heels, For Love headband
 Evening Look 1
Imagine: Cocktails with coworkers
Main Staple: Calvin Klein dress
Accents: NY&Co. belt, Express earrings and clutch, Charlotte Russe heels
________________________________________
Day Look 2
Imagine: Shopping about town
Main Staples: Max Studio dress, Forever 21 coverlet
Accents: Jessica Simpson bag, For Love earrings, Target flats
Evening Look 2
Imagine: Dinner with old friends
Main Staples: Max Studio dress, Forever 21 coverlet
Accents: Express clutch, Express earrings, Target heels
For even more of a switch-up here,
I could have left off the coverlet for day or chosen a black cropped coverlet instead for evening.
This dress could also look more casual and just as charming with a cute denim jacket.
Add flats or wedges and voila, perfect fall weather carnival date outfit!
Of course, any switch-up has MANY options if you're creative. :) I just want to drive the point home that quality staples and switching up the accents are important in any functional wardrobe.
It's fun to take pieces and dress them up or down, for whatever the occasion calls.
Styling outfits, just like applying makeup, is an art form because dressing often relies on your emotions/mood of the day. How do you feel today? Translate that into your outfit and see what happens.
______________________________________________
Day Look 3
Imagine: Brunch with girlfriends
Main Staple: Scarlett dress
Accents: Miztique bag, Bakers heels, For Love earrings, Belt (n/a)
Evening Look 3
Imagine: At a winery
Main Staple: Scarlett dress
Accents: Steve Madden booties, Tommy Hilfiger wallet as clutch, For Love earrings
You may have noticed that:
I used the turquoise Bakers peep-toe heels in 2 of the above outfits. I also used the smoke and pewter For Love earrings in 2 of the above outfits. Additionally, I used the black Express clutch and the Express earrings twice in the above outfits. The strategy of choosing outfits early and being able to mix/match and coordinate also makes packing for travel much easier and maybe even fun instead of stressful.

It's not about how many items you have... it's about the quality of each item and your confidence to style each outfit with the pieces that work for you. As always, have fun and have a fabulous day every day!

Summer Fashion 2011

Summer fashions are fun, flirty and empowering.  This summer season is no different.  Bring on the gorgeous summer fashions, for I am ready to style.

One of my favorite classics is also once again trendy- LACE. Lace can be sweet, girly and sexy.  Lace tops, lace dresses, lace accessories- they are all perfect for summer wear.  TRY IT:  Combine a lace piece with a menswear piece, add a statement accessory and talk about a fabulous contrast that will turn heads.

Fashion is art. It is a personal and cultural expression.  Fashion is creative, inspiring, expressive, dynamic and functional.  Fashions fade, and fashions trend.  Decade-specific fashions are a common inspiration for current designers, so it is no surprise that often the decade-specific fashions reemerge with new life. This summer 50s, 60s and 70s fashions are showcased.  We may not all be fans of every retro-reincarnation, but subtly adding decade-specific (authentic or new) pieces into our summer wardrobe can be fun.  Shopping for vintage pieces is definitely a perfect way to spend a beautiful afternoon with friends.

In addition to lace treasures and 50s/60s/70s retro finds, expect to see bold stripes, bright colors, funky wedges, feminine shaping, funky-chic patterns, bright nail color and lots of personality.  Wear what speaks to you, and have fun.

If you would like to be featured on this blog or my NEW blog (coming soon!), email me at cs.stylelife@yahoo.com.  Thanks!  :)

Have a fabulous day every day.

The British ROYAL Wedding

Okay, be honest.  Who watched the British Royal Wedding LIVE?  No matter who you are, how can you resist a beautiful wedding?  I admit I shed a few tears.

My interest in the wedding grew exponentially this past week.  I watched a Lifetime movie with my Mom based on Catherine and William...  and I was in!  So then, I had every intention of waking at 3am to watch the entire live coverage, but I decided sleep was important.  At 6am, I watched what I could of the live portion, and caught the wedding ceremony when E! played the encore. Thank goodness for the encore on E!

The wedding was fabulously traditional, yet modernized and lovely.  The wedding fashions were breathtaking!  I am hereby promoting hats and fascinators at weddings, luncheons or whenever us ladies feel a hat would be a perfect addition.

Catherine's dress was phenomenal!  The dress was a McQueen masterpiece by Sarah Burton.  The dress fit Catherine perfectly and was reminiscent of Grace Kelly's wedding dress.  Catherine made the dress her own though. I also loved that Catherine did her own makeup.  I respect that she is a self-sufficient woman who knows what she wants, and she wanted William to recognize her.  Admirable.

What was your favorite part of the British Royal Wedding?

Fashionista Alert: RACHEL ZOE

Celebrities tend to look ultra-amazing on the red carpet and many in their daily life also.  Many celebrities are polished and poised.  Their outfits are custom-tailored to their already beautiful bodies making for near flawlessness once the photos are taken and hit the magazine stands.  So how do these celebrities manage to maintain their polish?  The answer for many celebrities is that it takes a great team behind the celebrity to help with hair, makeup, styling and assisting.  I'm definitely not saying their beauty is tainted by the extra help.  It just puts a certain perspective on celebrity.

One person who deserves credit for many of "Hollywood's" best dressed is RACHEL ZOE, stylist extraordinaire.  She is not only a fashionista and a celebrity fairy god-mother, she is also a reality star (celebrity in her own right) and a new mom.

I just recently discovered her website/blog at www.rachelzoe.com and subscribed to THE ZOE REPORT.  I highly recommend subscribing now.  Try it out, and let me know what you think.

Enjoy Spring and have fun with your style. As always, please email at cs.stylelife@yahoo.com or call me at (618) 401-1434 with questions, comments or to book an appointment.  Thank you.

Welcoming Spring Into Your Wardrobe

Spring 2011 is upon us, yay!  Let the sunshine pour in the windows (on days the rain subsides).  Spring is a time of rebirth, reawakening and really bright, beautiful colors and styles.  Spring is beautiful in nature and in fashion.  Is your wardrobe spring ready?  If not, it's time to reinvigorate your closet.

Spring 2011 trends include, but are not limited to, caramel browns (especially for shoes), nudes (for every skintone), florals, lace, 70s inspired flavors, Bohemian updates, mini dresses, updated maxi dresses and tea length skirts.  Braids and beach-wave hair are definitely a do when styled accordingly for the occasion.  Small barrettes are the hot hair accessory of the moment.  Spring makeup is generally more sun-kissed and fresh, but bright eyeshadow is perfect for spring (and summer).

While shopping for spring clothing and accessories, remember to have fun and be positive.  You are beautiful, and your body is unique to YOU.  You may try on several items that may not work for you, but you may also find several items that do!  So keep that last part in mind.  Please don't worry about the size tags.  Focus on clothing that fits, flatters and boosts your confidence.  The ultimate goal is to look and feel fabulous, not to worry about what size you wear.  We are usually our toughest critics, but show yourself some love.  You are amazing so your clothes should emphasize just that.

And you have standards.  When trying on different pieces, remember to aim for only purchasing clothing that rates at least an 8.5 out of a 10 scale.  L-O-V-E each piece you buy; otherwise it may just sit in your closet taking up the very valuable boutique closet space.

Speaking of closet space, how much clothing do you have stuffed in your closet that just doesn't fit quite right?  If you do not already have a tailor, I highly recommend hiring one- definitely worth the small investment.  Some dry-cleaners, clothing stores and tux rental shops have tailors on hand.  A tailor can help you transform an ill-fitting piece of clothing into a custom-like favorite, if there is enough material to do so.

Have a very happy and fabulous spring!  As always, please email me at cs.stylelife@yahoo.com with any questions, comments or to schedule an appointment with me.  Thank you.

Fall Fashion 2010

Hey fashionistas and style queens/ princesses. Winter is around the corner, but there are still lots of days in this fall season left to strut your fall fashion and everyday style know-how.

Plaids done right, boots and booties galore (especially with interesting embellishments), opaque leggings, leopard print anything, lacy tights, ruffles, lace, pearls, trench coats and so much more feminine fabulousness is on trend right now. I am super excited about a chic classic growing in popularity for fall and winter- TWEED. Chanel lovers everywhere are celebrating. An outfit with a tweed jacket can be transformed from classic and prissy (of which I am still a fan) to punchy and unexpected by adding over a tight tank, with dark-wash denim jeans and sexy heels or over a fabulous dress with heels... Button the jacket, leave it open, put a belt (or ribbon) over the jacket... The possibilities are almost endless.

Keep in mind, most of the above trend-worthy items are pretty classic so this is a great time to buy staple pieces for your wardrobe. As always, flavorize each outfit with your own touch.

Accessories and hair are perfect avenues to customize your look further. High volume hair and sexy poofs are super hot now (and always have been to me, as I often do a voluminous poofy bun with my hair). Add a sassy clip and voila! With that said, you may want to make certain that you are completely satisfied with the volume of your hair before you walk out the door. How does your hair look from all angles? There is a fine line between "what-the-Jersey?" and sexy superstar.

Always make sure you are 100% confident with your whole ensemble. It should fit and flatter you, no matter which trend or style. You are beautiful, and your style should accentuate that (not detract from that).

Have a fabulous day every day! Stay stylish.

What IS In Your Closet?

Do you often stand at your closet and struggle with what you will wear that day? Would you like your closet to be easy (and fun) to look through like a boutique? Do you want your closet to be organized but you just haven't taken the time to do so yet? What is holding you back from organizing and enjoying your closet? Do you wear outfits that you plan and clothes you feel fabulous in, or do you rush out the door each morning without planning and feeling great in your outfit? If you feel like you are in a 'style funk,' what are you waiting for to enhance your style? There are many ways to enhance your style on your own or with some assistance from a StyleLife Consultant.

If you are trying to enhance your style on your own, try the following steps and evaluate how you feel once you tried each step.

1. Get a 3-angle mirror for a complete view of the clothing on your body, or have an honest person near to help you make decisions.

2. Interview yourself. How do you feel? How do you feel in each piece of clothing you own? What do you like about each piece? When do you feel your best? When do you feel your sexiest? What is your favorite feature on yourself? What is your profession? Do you have young kids and/or pets? What is your image saying about you to your family, friends, coworkers, boss, clients and strangers? What would you like your image to say? What can you incorporate into your daily routine to maintain your new style once you have achieved it? For example, will you spend 10 minutes each night preparing (steaming the clothes included here if needed) the next day's outfit down to the shoes and accessories? Also, will you look in the mirror before you walk out the door to make certain that your outfit looks put together?
If you would like a professional perspective, hiring a StyleLife Consultant can be helpful, fun and life-changing. A StyleLife consultant will conduct a profile interview of the above questions and more to try to fully understand where you stand in regard to your style and what you would like to achieve.

3. Try on every single piece of clothing you own, and evaluate how you feel in each piece. Does each piece "fit and flatter" your body (height, shape, size- by look and feel- NOT by the tag size)?

4. Decide which pieces of clothing you will keep, alter or give away. It is handy to use multiple baskets or boxes to distinguish between each category for easy clean-up.

5. Once you have your "keep" items together, organize them in your closet. Use a convenient method. For example, like with like- shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, etc. Or organize by work wear, weekend wear and special occasion wear. Then, further organize by sub-categories of like with like. You can take it even further and organize by color too.

6. Once you have organized your clothes in a convenient and fabulous way, evaluate your wardrobe's 'style holes,' and write a list of clothing pieces that would fill the 'style holes.' For example, do you have a solid white oxford button-up that fits and flatters your figure? If not, that should definitely be on your list. When writing this list keep in mind that much of the list will consist of solid, neutral colored items that are your staple pieces. You should also consider including accessories/other key pieces (jewelry, bags, belts, shoes) on your list. Having an idea of what to shop for will definitely make the process seem less daunting. And you can budget accordingly. Your staple items will get more wear so focus on quality even if that means spending a little more to get higher quality.

7. Go shopping. A StyleLife Consultant will help with personal shopping assistance, but if you do not hire a professional, consider taking along an honest friend who can help give you feedback when you try on each piece. Ask yourself how each piece fits your body from all angles? Do you feel confident in each piece? Rate each piece on a scale from 1 -10. Don't settle for anything under an 8 or 9. You want to look and feel fabulous no matter what is in your closet. Only buy what you will wear with confidence.

8. Play dress up, and try on outfits from your closet. Photograph the outfits that you rate a 10 and keep in a 'style book' for easy planning and finding later. Include shoes, bags and jewelry. It may help to keep note of which accessories you put with each outfit.

9. Plan ahead. Each Sunday afternoon, take a few minutes to plan 5(-7) outfits for the work week ahead (yes, domestic goddesses are included, of course). Try using sachet bags to store the smaller accessories, and then hook it on the hanger to the appropriate outfit. Also, try using shoe bags for the shoes if space is an issue. *Coordinating outfits ahead of time in this way is extremely helpful for travel as well.

10. Enjoy the rewards of being even more fabulous and organized.

Have a fabulous day every day!

Spring 2010 Fashion Preview

It is February and that means spring is near. For many of us, spring is an exciting time. Flowers bloom, the sun shines in between beautiful rain showers and fabulous fashions emerge, or re-emerge in many cases. Of course many of us may not have our new spring wardrobe completed yet, but we still have some time, so worry not. Here is a preview of what you can expect for Spring 2010 fashion trends .

Like many spring collections, Spring 2010 fashion will be filled with lots of color. Brights and pastels will both be in trend. Some trends will be inspired by cinematic pieces and others by nature. We will also see a lot of nature-influenced styles, including natural materials on purses and shoes. Naturals are going to be more popular than ever given our society's awareness of being ecologically and animal-friendly. In addition, expect to see lots of imaginative heels and dresses. We will see a lot of pieces with funky colors and unexpected combinations. White will also be on the fashion platter, but expect to see it with fun and colorful accessories. Spring fashion is all about having fun and putting the winter blues behind us. Bring on the sunny days and fabulous outfits.

As always, wear what makes you feel and look your best. Wear what fits and flatters your beautiful body and enjoy dressing each day. Have a fabulous day every day! :)

Fearless Fashions

Fashion is a fabulous art form that serves to help us express ourselves. Following fashions is fun. But follow trends too closely and it can be expensive and risky considering that trends typically last for only one or two seasons until new trends are the focus.

Incorporating classic looks into each outfit helps to balance out the trendy pieces and keeps the trends grounded and everyday wearable. I recommend investing the majority of your wardrobe budget into your main staple wardrobe pieces. These main pieces should be the backbone of your style. Your accent pieces and any trendy pieces should be the less expensive pieces as you probably will not wear them as often as your staples.

In addition to evaluating the value and cost of trends, remember to evaluate how the trend looks on you. Is the trend flattering on you? How will you feel 1, 5 or 10 years from now when you look back on photos of you wearing this particular trend? Are you following this trend simply because you saw it on the runway or on a celebrity? Only wear what suits you and makes you feel and look fabulous. Don't let the clothes wear you.

Shopping For Fall Basics

Summer is enchanting us with its sunny days... for now... and the heat makes it more enticing to wear some sexy and semi-revealing pieces like a mini LBD, but what happens when the season changes and the chill sets in? How can we maintain our fabulous styles and still include our sexy flavor?

Here is a list of a few sexy style should-haves for the upcoming fall season:

*Chic, fitted solid lightweight jacket or trench coat with your personal flavor- like a metallic fabric or contrasting belt
--Check out bebe, J. Crew, Macy's, Cache, www.spiegel.com and any other store that offers beautifully stylish coats

*Dark fitted denim jeans that make you feel like a star are a style necessity. Make sure you try on lots of jeans to find the best pair(s) for you and your body.
--Check out any store that sells jeans and try on, try on, try on... it will pay off.

*Lace tights are practically a must. Sexy, classic and sophisticated. Lace reveals a little leg and a lot of style. With so many styles and colors to choose from, it should be easy to find at least one pair you will fall in love with.
--Check out www.express.com for some ideas.

*Boots to pair with pants and skirts. Make sure the boots you choose are flattering on you given your height and proportions.
--Check out www.bakersshoes.com, www.cutesygirl.com, www.victoriassecret.com and www.macys.com (Jessica Simpson) for just a few of the fabulous boots available.

*Thin tops and sweaters mixed with some chunky ones for layering. The different weights and textures add interest and movement. Make sure the bulkier pieces are minimal, always the top layer and that the pieces never hide your body. Accentuate the positive. :) Try on different combinations at:
--Forever21, H&M, Old Navy, Express, Ann Taylor, The Limited, Macy's and any other stores that speak to you

*A beautiful day bag to carry your everyday "essentials" is an every season essential
--Check out www.coach.com, www.macys.com and bags by Jessica Simpson. I highly recommend her designs.

*Remember that accessories are still important to complete any outfit.
--Try For Love for affordable, trendy costume jewelry, bags and belts.

Enjoy the changing seasons. Enjoy dressing for each day. And may you wear only the clothes that make you look and feel sexy and confident.

Spring Fashion Preview

Spring is almost here, and that means spring clothing, sunny days, blooming flowers, a whole new perspective and a more stylish and confident you.

Is your wardrobe ready for this spring? If not, worry not. You still have some time to build up (or simply add to) your wardrobe for the upcoming season, and here is a preview of what is to come. Spring 2009 fashion trends will include bright (even neon) colors and lots of white; classic and trendy blends; brightly colored heels and wedges; accessories with your own flavor; graphic prints; dresses in lots of different shapes, colors and fabrics; and so much more.

Remember, follow trends wisely and gracefully, as in- do not be a victim of fashion trends. Incorporate the trends you love and that work for you... Not every trend is right for every BODY. Everyone can find (and wear) stylish ensembles (even if the outfit is not straight off the runway for that particular season). Focus on what looks and feels fabulous on you. Your clothing should "fit and flatter" your figure.
